THIS EVENT HAS TAKEN PLACE
Ian McGarry is the General Secretary of Equity - the British Actors Equity Association - the only Trade Union to represent artists from across the entire spectrum of arts and entertainment. Ever since its establishment by a group of West End performers in 1930, Equity's main function has been to negotiate minimum terms and conditions of employment for its members, endeavouring to ensure these take account of social and economic developments. In addition, it works at national level by lobbying government and other bodies on issues of importance to its membership - funding for Regional Theatre, for example - and provides a wide range of services and benefits for its members, such as insurance and pension schemes.
Ian McGarry has been General Secretary of Equity since 1991 and is currently President of the Federation of Entertainment Unions. He is Vice-President of the International Federation of Actors and joint Secretary of the London and Provincial Theatre Councils.
